Methane is a greenhouse gas 21 times more potent than CO2, and it is leaking from natural gas wells at much higher levels than anticipated.

Scientists at the EDF (Environmental Defence Fund) suggest that shifting to natural gas from coal-fired generators has climactic benefits as long as the leakage rate from production is below 3.2%.

Methane leaks were expected in natural gas wells, however researchers from the American Geophysical Union found leaking as high as 9% in one gas field. The gas industry estimates the leak rate at about half that amount, and the EPA estimates leak rates to be 2.4% of production, lower than the industry they are monitoring. Something clearly doesn't add up.

Using leakage rates from anyone other than the EPA, natural gas has a bigger environmental impact than coal!

The first phase of the district energy system being installed for the Osoyoos Indian Band is well underway. This exciting new project being undertaken by Geotility is a first in the region. The common closed loop geothermal system will provide heating and cooling to the current phases of the business park and also to the future corrections facility planned for the development. A future connection to the Vincor winery site adjacent to this property is also a high likelihood, thereby increasing the overall efficiency of the system.

The district energy is being operated as a utility, owned and managed by the OIB.

GeoTility and utility provider Corix (formerly Terasen Utility Services) have established a strategic alliance offering a community of over 600 homes with geoexchange technology at a fraction of the cost. The project is the largest geoexchange master planned community in Western Canada, setting a template for future sustainable developments.

On January 19th GeoTility President Jim Leask and Wilden developer Gerhard Blenk met with Federal Environment Minister John Baird to discuss geoexchange technology and the government’s new Eco Energy Initiative announcement.

GeoTility has submitted a list of recommendations to the Conservative Government regarding potential programs that would maximize the energy efficiencies and GSG reductions directly as a result of increasing geoexchange installations in Canada.

Montréal, January 26, 2007 –The Board of Directors of the Canadian GeoExchange Coalition (CGC) have unanimously agreed to establish a Permanent Training Fund. The Fund will be used specifically to ensure
that upgrades to the comprehensive national geoexchange training program, developed over the past 18 months by the CGC, are
implemented on an annual basis.
